A feminist artist has turned photos of her vagina into a scarf. For those who were looking for a more adventurous way to keep their necks cozy this winter, listen up: feminist performance artist Christen Clifford is transforming photos of the inside of her vagina into silk scarves. Clifford's project, called "Pussy Bow," launched on Wednesday. Interestingly enough, the "pussy bow" is actually a phrase in the fashion world for a feminine bow tie. Clifford says that the decision to turn vaginal photos into a scarf was a deliberate play on the "pussy bow" term. "Chanel and Yves Saint Laurent popularized it," Clifford writes on her website. "The first women to enter the 'professional' realm adopted it as a feminine iteration of the tie. Margaret Thatcher made it her 'look.' Portia Di Rossi wears one in every episode of 'Scandal.' So this is a REAL Pussy Bow."

Every Question You've Ever Had About Your Breasts, Answered

Breasts have been, interestingly, one of the buzziest topics of 2015—from the #freethenipple movement to the push for acceptance of public breastfeeding to the proud women who go viral for celebrating breast cancer survival with beautiful areola tattoos.

But breasts aren't just an "issue"—they're something we live with every day. And considering how close they are to our hearts, it's kind of crazy that so many of us still have so many questions about our own anatomy.

In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we looked to ​Sherry Ross, M.D., a Los Angeles-based gynecologist, to answer our most burning questions about breasts, once and for all.
Why do our breasts feel like rocks before we get our period?

"It's the raising hormones, estrogen, and progesterone you experience 1-2 weeks before your period," she explains. And if you suffer from PMS, it's likely you'll have exaggerated breast symptoms. During your period, you should also steer clear of caffeine, tobacco, and certain medications as they can bolster these side-effects.​

Why do we get random hairs on our nipples?

Chances are, you've had more than a few stray hairs spring up in your lifetime. And while they may be a little disconcerting, there's no need to worry. "During different stages of life and hormonal surges, hair growth around the nipples is considered normal," assures Dr. Ross. "The areola naturally has hair follicles and some women are more prone to this than others.​"
We know lots of women have breasts that aren't the same size...but is there a reason?

"Body parts that come in a set of two are never exactly a mirror image of each other—​different is normal​!" says Dr. Ross.

​Why do our nipples itch sometimes?

Normally, nipples shouldn't itch, but it definitely happens and a change of season could be to blame.

"Dry or damaged skin on the nipple can cause them to itch," explains Dr. Ross. "Eczema is a common and abnormal skin condition causing this delicate area to become dry, scaly, red and itchy. Nipple eczema can occur during ​pregnancy and breastfeeding."

If they do itch, use a moisturizer like lanolin cream, extra virgin coconut oil, or, you know, nipple balm, to treat them. 

What's causing our breasts to sag *besides* gravity?

Simply put, poor support = saggy breasts. While a form-fitting, everyday bra will provide support to breast tissue for typical daily activities, you must wear a sports bra when exercising.

"If you wear a regular bra, ​the delicate and sensitive breast tissue will bounce and move in such a way where pain and trauma can occur," she says. " If there is lack of proper long-term support, breast tissue, with its fibrous ligaments and fatty tissue, will stretch and become saggy.
Is non-organic deodorant posing a serious cancer risk to our breasts?

You've heard the medical myth: Using a deodorant filled with aluminum-based and sweet-smelling ingredients plugs the sweat glands and ducts close to the breast tissue, changing normal cells to cancerous ones.​ But you can relax according to Dr. Ross, as there is no conclusive or even reliable medical evidence that proves deodorants increase your risk of breast cancer. How often are lumps in our breast cause for concern?

Before you send yourself into a tizzy, know this: Breast lumps are common, affecting 8 of 10 women, and most are not cancerous.

As far as analyzing these lumps, you must pay close attention to your menstrual cycle.

"If you're feeling a breast lump just before your period, chances are it will go away once you finish your period," explains Dr. Ross. "During the premenstrual time, hormones cause an increase in nodularity of breast tissue creating benign cysts that will ultimately go away once you start your period."

There are, however, instances in which you must always get a lump, big or small, checked out by a professional.

"If you have a persistent breast lump or cyst, it is important to have your doctor examine you and determine if further testing, such as a breast ultrasound, is necessary," she says. "In this instance, size does not matter."

How often should we be performing self-exams on our breasts?

First thing's first, you should know your body very well. ​"Breast tissue can be intimidating in the beginning, but once you are familiar with your own breast tissue and all its normal lumps and bumps, you will be able to find abnormal changes if they occur," she says.

The best time to check your breasts? During the first week of your period when the hormonal effects on breast tissue have subsided, says Dr. Ross.

At what age should you get your first mammogram?

The thing is, women and physicians are equally confused about this. For example, while the American College of Obstetricians/Gynecologists says 40, continuing every 1 to 2 years until 50, when they should be done yearly, The American Cancer Society suggests getting them annually starting at 45, then getting them every other year starting at 55. What is universally agreed upon? Dr. Ross believes it's knowing your individual risk factors, as well as weighing the benefits and overall risks when making your own screening guidelines. Risk factors for breast cancer include:

1.     A number of first-degree relatives with breast cancer
2.     Having had your first menstrual period before age 12
3.     If you had your first pregnancy after age 30 or you've never had a full-term pregnancy.
4.     If you've had a number of previous breast biopsies
5.     If you've had breast cancer before
6.     Presence of atypical hyperplasia
7.     Mammographic breast density
8.     Excessive alcohol consumption
9.     BMI is less than 30
10.     Physical inactivity

What kind of things compromise the health of our breasts?

The biggest culprits: ​Low levels of vitamin D, consuming high-fat meat, butter and dairy along with fried foods, excessive alcohol consumption, obesity, and physical inactivity, says Dr. Ross.

And that's not all, unfortunately.

"​Currently research is being done to pinpoint other environmental health hazards, such as radiation, chemicals, flame retardants, industrial chemicals used to make rubber, vinyl and polyurethane, pesticides and other pollutants, which make breast tissue more susceptible to breast cancer.​"
What can we do to reduce our risk of breast cancer?

According to Dr. Ross, the four most important things you can do are:

•     Eat a colorful, plant-based diet
•     Limit alcohol consumption
•     Exercise regularly
•     Control your weight

You probably already know your vagina is seriously impressive. This amazing body part can bring out intense pleasure, annoying pain, and even another tiny human being. In short, it's pretty awe-inspiring. That's why we think it's crucial to stay on top of everything going on below the belt. Need a primer? Read on for all the fascinating facts:

1. It can handle a pretty intense workout. "The muscular tone of the vagina is so strong," says Alyssa Dweck, M.D., co-author of V is For Vagina. On a related note, kegels are seriously effective at strengthening the surrounding pelvic floor muscles for more intense orgasms. Could there be any better reason to exercise? (Wait, yes there is these seven exercises for better sex.)
2. Your diet may affect how things smell down there. While there hasn't been much research on the topic, anecdotal evidence suggests that your scent can vary during ovulation and even when you eat something pungent like garlic, says Dweck.
3. The clitoris has more nerve endings than anywhere else on the body, says Dweck. No wonder it's like the control center of your orgasm!
4. Your vagina actually expands during sex. Ever wonder how it can seem pretty shallow when you're putting in a tampon but can also accommodate even a well-endowed guy? It's called vaginal tenting, says Dweck, and it's when the inner two-thirds of your vagina increase in length and width when you're aroused. Seriously, vagina, you never fail to impress us.
5. Not all lady parts are created equal in fact, some clitorises may be a little closer to or farther from the vaginal opening. A brand-new study found that women whose clitorises were farther away from the vaginal opening were more likely to have trouble orgasming (probably due to decreased stimulation). But don't worry, these nine positions practically guarantee an orgasm.
6. It tells you when it's baby-making time. "It's incredibly cool that your vagina will let you know when it's the optimal time to get pregnant," says Dweck. "The cervical mucus during ovulation is clear, rubbery, and stretchy." If you're not taking oral contraceptives (which interfere with this process), watch out for this pretty cool sign from below.
7. It allows for so many different types of pleasure. All those pleasure-packed areas in the vagina mean you can have four different kinds of orgasms (clitoral, vaginal, blended, and multiple). Correct us if we're wrong, but can't guys only have one kind of orgasm? Yeah, thought so.
8. One word: childbirth. "It's an unbelievable fact that the vagina can allow a 10-plus-pound baby to come through it and still come back to a normal size," says Dweck. The healing process generally takes about six months post-baby, but that's still pretty impressive considering what the body part went through. 9. There's no such thing as a "normal" vagina. From the vulva to the labia, they come in all shapes and sizes, so don't fret about being perfect below the belt.
10. Your hoo-ha is so self-sufficient, it even cleans itself. In fact, many intravaginal products and washes can increase your risk of bacterial and yeast infections by throwing your pH levels out of whack. So stick to regular soap and water, and let your lady parts do their own thing. Names Of Vaginal Parts

Although a woman’s external genitals are commonly referred to as the “vagina,” the vagina is actually one of several organs that comprise this section of a woman’s body.

Collectively, these parts are called the vulva. Rich with nerves, the vulva can provide sexual pleasure when properly stimulated.

The vagina is a muscular tube about three to four inches long that ends the birth canal. This is where a man’s penis enters the woman during sexual intercourse. The vaginal opening is visible from the outside but it is protected by the labia when a woman stands and during most activities.

The labia majora are two folds of skin that extend from the front of the vaginal opening to the back of it. The outer surfaces of the folds have darker-colored skin and stronger hairs, while the inner folds are smoother.

The labia majora join to form the cleft shape of the female genitals. This is also known as the pudendal cleft or the cleft of Venus, after the Roman goddess of love.

Between the labia majora are the labia minora, two folds of skin that also extend down from the clitoris and around the vaginal opening. These vary in size from woman to woman. They are joined together by a small fold of skin known as the fourchette, or “little fork.” This can be torn during childbirth or during acts of sexual violence, and doctors often use sutures to repair it.

The clitoris is a crucial element for sexual arousal in most women. This small sexual organ at the top of the vagina at the junction of the labia minora appears outside the folds of skin like a small pink button.

During sexual stimulation, the clitoris functions much like a man’s penis in that it becomes erect thanks to signals from the brain. The shaft under the skin has erectile tissue, which becomes engorged with increased blood flow. The clitoris is a very sensitive area when stimulated. Most women cannot achieve orgasm without direct stimulation to the clitoris.

The outer female genitals also include the urethra. Located between the vaginal opening and the frontal connection of the labia minora, the urethral opening is where a woman expels urine from her body.
